There is stuff like BSN Syntha 6 and Dymatize's Elite 12 hour out, they are a mixture of proteins that do not just get in and digest right away. I honestly believe the mixes are better for growth. Some of them cost a bit more, if that's a concern, then stick to the basic Optimum Whey, Champion or Dymatize Whey and mix in your own fats and milk to slow down the digestion a bit.
I do enjoy Dymatize's Elite 12 hour though, it is a great product.
Your question about one type is to get bigger and one is more of a meal replacement doesn't make a lot of sense to me, I think that in the overall scheme of things, your total calories from your solid foods + supplementation (via powders, etc.) has to total over what you burn each day and that is what equates to your size gains in reality. You need a combo of quality food and quality supplements to get in your nutrition each day, consistently.

Isolates are best post work-out because they are absorbed into the muscle much quicker than a time released or blended protein. However, for pretty much any other time during the day a slower releasing protein is usually more appropriate . An isolate can spike insulin levels due to the fast absorbtion rate so it should not be used as a meal replacement unless it is being mixed with some source of carbohydrate which will slow down the absorbtion of it. For those that are lactose - intolerant an isolate is the best bet as it is the best filtered and contains the least amount of lactose.

Also not all blends of Protein are the same. Some are time released as they have Casein, Calcium Casseinate, Soy, Egg, or Buckwheat proteins which will digest at slower rates than Whey. Then there are other protein powders that are just Whey. Some are just pure Isolate (90%+ protein), others are Whey Isolate first and Whey concentrate second (around 80% protein). Then the last is Whey concentrate first and whey isolate second (Usually around 70%). So there is no real difference in these for speed of digestion as they are all whey which digests fast. With these blends if comes done to a blend of cost - purity that you want. Then like jen said as you get in to multiple Protein sources then you have Time released protein which is better for anytime of the day.
Has anyone ever used iso-gold by pvl? Is the taste any good? thanks

Don't bother with blends, they're a waste. Not saying they're pointless or useless, but a waste none the less. This is assuming you're eating enough meals throughout the day.
Other then that, stick with a quality whey protein that you can use in the morning and post workout. As well it can be useful to get a quality casein protein (slow digesting) to take before bedtime.
If you can get these two you should be set and it will be all you need.
